Former Hospital Dump Site
Site Description
The Hospital Dump Site is situated in an area that formerly was the location of the former 39th U.S. Navy Hospital (which has operated from 1944 - late 1960s'). The site is located between the Fairways No. 13 and No. 14 on the Kingfisher Golf Course. Some of the surface debris consists of glass ware, ceramic, and metal items that are consistent with medical waste of that era.
It is a 0.6 acre site that is approximately 335 feet by 80 feet wide at the base of a cliff. The area is identified in records as a medical facility with observed artifacts such as a medical related glass items (i.e. intravenous bottles, syringes, pipettes, batteries, ceramic and metal debris). Small arms items have also been recovered.
In May 2019, a RI/FS was conducted at the Hospital Dump Site. The goal of the study is to determine whether metals are present in site soil at concentrations that pose unacceptable human health and/or ecological risks. Soil samples were collected within the boundaries of the project site using Multi-Incremental Sampling (MIS) methodology and submitted for laboratory analysis for RCRA-8 metals to delineate the nature and extent of contamination associated with the Former Hospital Dump Site. Moreover, a partially buried drum containing petroleum was removed and a confirmation sampling was collected beneath the drum, and analyzed for TPH-DRO and TPH-RRO concentrations.
